Will I still need to pay my student loans after filing for bankruptcy?

When you file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy, certain debts may be discharged. Depending on your situation, these can include credit card debts, medical bills, and other sums of money that are not backed by collateral.

Student loans, however, cannot be discharged with a bankruptcy filing. You will still have to pay them off, no matter if they were private or federal loans.
