PAULA GREENWAY: Filing for bankruptcy is not the worst thing that can happen to you. Filing for bankruptcy can actually be a tool to change someone's life.
Birmingham is my home. I grew up here. This is where I've devoted my practice to. I like the people of Birmingham. Nice people, they're good people. Hard working people.
Many times when someone will walk into our office, they'll be embarrassed about the situation that they're in. They feel bad about not being able to pay their bills or being delinquent on bills.
Most of our clients are really hard-working people. They're people that have, that have suffered a loss. Either a loss of a job, the loss of a spouse. They're put in situations beyond their control, which they have to step up and pay for things that they would not normally have to pay for.
When somebody walks into my office, they can expect that they're going to be taken care of. We want them to be able to put their troubles and their fears in our hands. And we want to know by the time they walk out of our office, those fears have transformed into feelings of hope.
I've had countless occasions where a client will come to me crying after a hearing or after a meeting and hug my neck and say thank you so much for helping me. Thank you for helping my family. Thank you for saving my home, saving my marriage, saving my job. That's the personal satisfaction that I get. There is hope.
